For the past 40 years or so the landscape of the American business plain had been focused on expending tremendous capital to grow a business, now a paradigm shift has taken place with the emergence of new information technology. Capital is preserved when innovative ways are explored to generate substantial growth.

There have been more billionaires created in the last two decades than in any other time in history. The amazing thing is the wealth was not created with company expenditure, but via investment capital from individuals wanting to be in on the next biggest thing. Information technology has led the way when it comes to wealth creation. The financial strength of a company is not always indicative of company size. Some extremely wealthy companies are located in the proverbial basement.

There aren’t any one- two- three step answers to utilizing IT to grow business. Each application of emerging technology is different. Developing a plan of growth for business involves many avenues of thought. IT is not limited to just the “geeks.” Many seasoned employees as well as new college graduates are exploring innovative ways to expand business.

Radio, newspaper, and TV advertising dollars are being redirected to more profitable Web and email resources. It appears that needless expenditure to promote business is limited to automobile dealerships and insurance companies. The evidence of the redirection of advertising funds is showing up in the closing of many major newspapers. The main revenue source for newspapers is provided by advertisers. Radio and TV also receive the life blood from advertising, but people seem to have become accustom to seeing or hearing ads during their favorite radio or TV entertainment.

Information technology’s role in business growth is extremely important in today’s market. Nowadays, a virtual office is becoming more and more feasible. You would be hard pressed to find a business that does not possess a computer. If a business uses a computer, then they are using IT in one form or another. No one knows the future of business, but one thing is for certain; IT is here and necessary if you want to grow your business in this economy.

We know that IT stands for Information Technology. We also seem to be aware that the IT guy (as we like to call them) is invaluable, maintaining those perplexing computer systems at the office. No one’s happier to see the IT guy after, for some bizarre reason, we lose access to our spreadsheets and documents.

Only, there is more to information technology than the standard office or home computer. If an ATM stops working, the call goes out for the IT guy. This also applies to graphic designing, network administration, to web mastering, and even record producing. All these fields are specialized and require a specific knowledge of the systems used. IT is a vast, rewarding field and it’s for anyone that believes they have a solid understanding of technology, and are willing to take the extra steps to study and properly develop their skills.

If you tend to build and maintain your own computers, there’s a place for you in the IT field. If you’re one of those people who love to take electronics apart and put them back together, again, perhaps the arena of information technology is for you.

Determine what your specific expertise is, what you enjoy exploring. This can include game testing, Internet machinations, medical it jobs or administrative networking. Now, begin searching your area or online for any educational opportunities that focus on these interests. Self teaching never hurts, but nothing helps more than the right classes, a degree and the proper certifications. Even as you perform these tasks, begin looking for employment in IT, entry level or otherwise. Employers are constantly on the prowl to invest in someone that not only shows the initiative, but will grow within the environment.

Unfortunately, the IT market is also very popular. Be prepared to face some of the stiffest competition in the job market. Know this challenge, but don’t let it alter your goal. Set a plan, begin your education and start networking by sending out your resume. Promote yourself as the employee that, in a few years, will be the asset and loyalist that an employer wants on their team.

The most important things you will need are going to be patience and perseverance. At the end of the road, look forward to steadily increasing your confidence, and your value to the company lucky enough to snag you. You can be the IT guy.
